Corbin Police receive new breathalyzers
The Corbin Police department received new portable Breathalyzer test units Monday. The new breathalyzers were received as part of a grant from the Bell, Knox, and Whitley Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy.

The Kentucky ASAP program works in conjunction with the Corbin Community Coalition to educate the public about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

“We have been trying to get these breathalyzers on our own, but the cost was significant. They run about $500 each and our department received 12 units,” Maiden said.

The new Alco-Sensors are more advanced than the traditional portable breathalyzers previously used by the Corbin Police Department.

“They are very accurate,” Maiden said. “If we are on patrol somewhere, like Nibroc, we can hold it over a drink, and we will know right away if there is alcohol present. This new unit also allows an officer to simply point it in a vehicle, and it will alert us if anyone in the vehicle has been drinking.”Breathalyzer asphalt shingle asphalt shingle

According to Susie Hart, director of the Kentucky ASAP program, the new Alco-Sensors are being provided to law enforcement agencies in Bell, Knox and Whitley counties.

“We have had an ongoing problem with drinking and driving in our area. We hope these new Alco-Sensors will help curb that problem,” said Hart.

Megan Howard, coordinator of the Corbin Community Coalition agrees. “The Corbin Community Coalition will work hand in hand with the Kentucky ASAP program as well as with local law enforcement agencies to find new ways to address the drug and alcohol abuse problems in our area,” Howard said.

Sgt. Glen Taylor, who applied for the grant on behalf of the Corbin Police Department, said he was very pleased and grateful when the new Alco-Sensor units arrived Monday.

Taylor said the Corbin Police Department will begin using the new Alco-Sensors immediately.
