Hi, Guys,
  Fuel cell is a hot topic. There are a lot of practical applications.
If you guys want to apply for funds, it is a good direction. It is
more a design problem than a CFD problem. CFD part is easy.

  Fuel Cells are electrochemical devices that convert a fuel's energy
directly to electrical energy. Fuel cells operate much like continuous batteries when supplied with fuel to the anode  and oxidant (e.g. air)
to the cathode. Fuel cells forego the traditional extraction of energy
in the form of combustion heat, conversion of heat energy to mechanical
energy (as with a turbine), and finally turning mechanical energy into electricity (e.g using a dynamo). Instead, fuel cells chemically combine
the molecules of a fuel and oxidizer without burning, dispensing with
the inefficiencies and pollution of traditional combustion.

Energy
  Production and distribution of energy affects all sectors of the global economy. The increasing industrialization of the world requires sustainable, highly efficient energy production. Without a major technology advance, projected energy production will dramatically impact the quality and sustainability of life on earth. For this reason, the application of the fuel technologies may be the most important technological advancement of the next decade.


Energy Environment
The need to supply more energy to an burgeoning industrialized world without increasing the adverse environmental effects of energy production is often referred to as the conflict between energy and environment. The adverse environmental effects include resource recovery impacts, pollutant emissions(e.g. NOx , SOx , hydrocarbons, CO) and a preponderance of evidence that suggests a global temperature impacts of products of complete combustion(CO2).


How does one resolve the conflict between energy production for an increasingly industrialized world and protection of environmental resources?  

The extraordinary environmental quality(ultra-low NOx, SOx, CO, hydrocarbon, and noise emissions) and high efficiency of fuel cells can significantly contribute to the mitigation of environmental effects while meeting increasing energy demands.
