Update on Program Arrangements for 32nd International Symposium on Combustion
Last week, I met with the Symposium Program Chairs, Professors Mitch Smooke and Hideaki Kobayashi, to help with the finalisation of the program for the 32nd Symposium. For the first time in the Institute’s history, we were deciding on a Symposium program separately from any decision about what papers would be published in the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute. We therefore took the opportunity to consider some significant changes in the structure of the Symposium.
For the 32nd Symposium, we have accepted significantly more papers than in the past. These papers are divided among 384 ORAL (54% of the total submitted) and 174 POSTER (24%) presentations. In choosing papers for oral presentation, we favoured the more highly ranked papers but all the accepted papers are part of the main program of the meeting. The Book of Abstracts of Accepted Papers will include both groups of papers and student presenters in either forum will be eligible to apply for travel grants.
The accepted POSTERS will be displayed on the first two days of the meeting, with approximately half being shown each day. ORAL presentations will run concurrently but there will be ample opportunity for attendees to attend these Accepted Poster Sessions. The last two days of the meeting will feature our traditional Work-in-Progress Posters of unreviewed work.
The selection of papers for the next issues of the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute will be under the control its newly appointed Editors. I am delighted to announce that Dr Philippe Dagaut of CNRS in Orléans, France and Professor Volker Sick from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor have accepted my invitation to become the inaugural editors of our new style of Proceedings. I also met with Philippe and Volker in Pittsburgh for final discussions with them on the procedures to select papers for publication.
The initial responses on suitability of papers for publication in the Proceedings will be made as soon as possible. As with any journal, some papers will be accepted (perhaps subject to minor revisions as per rebuttals already provided by authors), some rejected, and some will be invited to resubmit for further review after significant revisions. The number of papers to be published is still unknown – the only criteria for ultimate publication is the Editors’ judgement as to the quality of the written paper and authors’ timeliness in submitting revisions. On the issue of quality, Philippe and Volker are committed to maintaining and improving the high standards traditionally associated with the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute – the introduction of further reviewing prior to publication will facilitate this.
I request your patience with this process, especially this first time around – the new arrangements are a big change from our previous practices. Our objective is to produce the volumes as early as possible in 2009 – the additional reviewing will add time, but we will cut significant time off the production schedule by eliminating Questions and Comments from the Proceedings. (An online discussion site is to be established to preserve this feature of the Symposium.)
