The conductivity of a plasma (i.e., ionized gas) is no longer a scalar but a second order tensor. In other words, the proportionality factor between the electric current density (J = J_bold) and the electric field strength (E = E_bold) in Ohm’s law is a matrix (SIGMA)

The conductivity in the direction parallel to the magnetic field (SIGMA_0) is often several orders of magnitude greater than those that are perpendicular to the magnetic field. SIGMA_0 depends on several factors. For a weakly ionized plasma (electron-atom collisions are dominant) SIGMA_0 is proportional to T_e^(-1/2) whereas for a strongly ionized plasma (electron-ion collisions are dominant) SIGMA_0 is proportional to T_e^(3/2), where T_e is the electron temperature.
